Will A Pro-Gadhafi “Green Revolution” Topple The NTC?

There is clear and growing pro-Gadhafi political and military activity here and it is why NTC leader Mustapha Abdul Jalil, the other day warned against the Gadhafi children raising an insurrection. Aisha Gadhafi, given Saif’s current incarceration, is perhaps the likely leader, given her intelligence, energy and strong commitment to replace “NATO’s rebels”, vindicate her father, preserve his correct legacy, and organize a reform movement along the lines that she and some family members and loyalists were working–with the approval, she claims, of her father before his death.

Every night more pro-Gadhafi graffiti appears on street walls, buildings and around Green (Martyrs) Square. Activists, and there appear to be more every day, assert that so far the NTC has not attacked them and they feel fairly free to speak out and even organize. It is anyone’s guess how long this situation will exist before a violent crackdown and open fighting.

Washington’s Enemy ‘Doesn’t Exist’ : Former CIA Officer

RT Interview with Michael Scheuer

Americans are in the crosshairs of terrorists worldwide purely due to Washington’s policy in the Muslim world, not because there is an Islamic enemy whose only aim is to kill Americans for their freedoms and lifestyle, insists a former CIA officer.

23 January 2012

A report released last week by Middle East human rights groups presents extensive evidence of war crimes carried out in Libya by the United States, NATO and their proxy “rebel” forces during last year’s war, which brought down the regime of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi. The “Report of the Independent Civil Society Fact-Finding Mission to Libya” presents findings of an investigation carried out last November by the Arab Organization for Human Rights, together with the Palestinian Center for Human Rights and the International Legal Assistance Consortium.

Based on interviews with victims of war crimes as well as with witnesses and Libyan officials in Tripoli, Zawiya, Sibrata, Khoms, Zliten, Misrata, Tawergha and Sirte, the report calls for the investigation of evidence that NATO targeted civilian sites, causing many deaths and injuries. Civilian facilities targeted by NATO bombs and missiles included schools, government buildings, at least one food warehouse, and private homes.

The report also presents evidence of systematic murder, torture, expulsion and abuse of suspected Gaddafi loyalists by the NATO-backed “rebel” forces of the National Transitional Council (NTC). It describes the forced expulsion of the mostly black-skinned inhabitants of Tawergha and the ongoing persecution of sub-Saharan migrant workers by forces allied to the NTC and its transitional government.

The investigators report savage and repeated beatings of prisoners held without trial or charges, the summary execution of pro-Gaddafi fighters, and witness reports of “indiscriminate and retaliatory murders, including the ‘slaughter’ (i.e., throat slitting) of former combatants.”

The war devastated the country. The NTC—an unstable coalition of ex-Gaddafi regime officials, Islamists, including some with links to Al Qaeda, and Western intelligence assets—itself estimates that the war took 50,000 lives and injured another 50,000 people. Rising infighting between the NTC’s factions is opening the door to full-scale civil war between rival clan-based and regional militias.

Just this weekend, amid warnings from NTC Chairman Mustafa Abdel Jalil of looming civil war, a crowd demanding the resignation of the transitional government forced its way into the NTC’s headquarters in Benghazi. Abdel Hafiz Ghoga, the vice president of the NTC, promptly resigned.

Libya suspends transitional government members

BENGHAZI, Libya — The head of Libya’s transitional government on Sunday suspended delegates from Benghazi, the city that kicked off the movement that toppled ruler Moammar Gadhafi last year.

The suspension the latest sign of discord within the body that led the anti-Gadhafi uprising but has struggled to establish an effective government to replace his regime.

The move follows protests in Benghazi accusing the body of corruption and not moving fast enough on reform. It was prompted by street protests and rejected by the delegates.

The announcement came the day after protesters stormed the National Transitional Council offices in Benghazi and carted off computers, chairs and desks while Mustafa Abdul-Jalil, head of the NTC, was holed up inside.

Assessing Al-Qa`ida’s Presence in the New Libya

    Mar 22, 2012
Authors: Aaron Y. Zelin, Andrew Lebovich

A year after Libyans rose up against Colonel Mu`ammar Qadhafi, Western governments and observers continue to watch the security situation in that country with trepidation, concerned with instability in the wake of Qadhafi’s ouster but also watchful for a possible spread of al-Qa`ida in the sparsely populated, oil-rich country.

This article provides an overview of the history of Libyans in jihadist organizations (including al-Qa`ida), an assessment of al-Qa`ida and affiliated media activities following the Libyan uprising, an analysis of available evidence of a potential al-Qa`ida presence in Libya, and an evaluation of the possible role the group could occupy in a new Libya.

A Coup In Mali – Made In Libya?

Yesterday, Malian soldiers made a lightning grab for power in the West African nation and today they seem to be wholly in charge, prompting calls from the UN, U.S. and others for a swift return to democratic government.

I freely admit I know diddely-squat about Mali, but I know of some very clever people who do and they are by-and-large all saying the same things: that Mali wasn’t exactly the “bastion of democracy” in West Africa that Hillary Clinton is making it out to have been and that the coup is another of the forseen-but-unplanned-for consequences of intervention in Libya last year.

AP Interview: Libya leader admits failure on stability as 20 killed in tribal clash in south

BENGHAZI, Libya — Libya’s leader acknowledged Monday that his government has failed to act quickly to restore stability, just as at least 20 people were killed in tribal battles in a southern city.

The deadly clashes underlined the fragile nature of Libya after the fall of longtime leader Moammar Gadhafi. The central government has been unable to impose its authority even in the capital, and Libya is ruled instead by squabbling tribes and militias.

Clashes in Southern Libya Kill Nearly 50

TRIPOLI—Three days of clashes between rival militias in southern Libya spread to the center of the country’s fourth-largest city on Tuesday despite the deployment of army troops trying to quell the violence, which has so far killed nearly 50 people.

The clashes highlight the challenges the government faces in imposing its authority after the ouster of Moammar Gadhafi.

Fighting between gunmen from Sabha and fighters from the Tibu ethnic group had reached the center of Sabha, Libya’s fourth-largest city, Ibrahim Misbah, a doctor at the main hospital, said.

An Interior Ministry official said the army had sent 300 soldiers stationed in southern Libya to help calm the situation on Monday. Another 300 soldiers left Tripoli on Tuesday to assist, he added.

22 people killed in Libya in clashes between rival towns country’s west

TRIPOLI, Libya — Militias from rival towns in western Libya battled each other with tanks and artillery on Tuesday in fierce fighting that killed at least 22 people, local officials said.

The clashes erupted over the weekend between the Arab-majority town of Ragdalein and the Berber-dominated town of Zwara, some 110 kilometers (70 miles) west of the capital Tripoli. The violence is fueled by deep-rooted animosity between the neighbors, who took different sides in Libya’s civil war that toppled Moammar Gadhafi last year.

    Ex-rebels attack Libya NTC headquarters

TRIPOLI – Libyan ex-fighters furious over a decision to halt a cash rewards scheme opened fire on Tuesday against the headquarters of the interim government, but no injuries were reported, sources said.

“The headquarters of the council of ministers was attacked by armed groups who fired their weapons,” read a statement issued by the office of the prime minister, making no mention of casualties.

The gunmen were “protesting the decision of the National Transitional Council to stop financial grants allocated to the revolutionaries,” who waged war against the regime of slain leader Moamer Gathafi last year.

Ian Martin, U.N. special envoy to Libya, was among those traveling in a convoy when it was hit by an explosive device while traveling through Benghazi. Hua Jiang, a spokeswoman for the U.N. Support Mission in Libya said no one was hurt in the attack.

“The matter now is handled by the local authorities,” she told U.N. Radio “As far as we understand, an investigation has been launched.”

Libya descends into militia chaos as hostages still held

    Ruth Pollard
    June 16, 2012

AMMAN: As the casualties mount from fresh clashes in southern Libya between soldiers and tribesmen, the security situation in the capital Tripoli, Zintan, Misrata and the eastern city of Benghazi remains shaky as militia groups extend their control.

Militia from former rebel strongholds have mounted a series of attacks over the last week, including a blast at the office of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Misrata on Tuesday.

A convoy carrying the British ambassador to Libya was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade in Benghazi on Monday, and days earlier, a rocket-propelled grenade was also fired at the US consulate in the eastern city. Two weeks ago, the international airport in Tripoli was seized by armed militia.

Libya’s tribal clashes leave 105 dead

Recent tribal clashes in western Libya left 105 people dead and some 500 injured, the government has said.

Government spokesman Nasser al-Manaa said there had been no fighting in the mountainous area since Monday, following the deployment of the army.

The area includes the towns of Zintan, Mizdah and Shegayga, some 150km (90 miles) south of the capital Tripoli.

The week-long clashes were seen as a test for Libya’s new government, which has struggled to assert its authority.

Snatched and detained – Libya’s “jungle law”

TRIPOLI (Reuters) – Abdulnasser Ruhuma was asleep in his bed when the militia fighters barged into his Tripoli home. The shouting woke the Libyan bank worker and he rushed downstairs to find around 40 men pointing their rifles at him.

Moments later they started beating him. Ruhuma’s wife and relatives begged the intruders to stop but they dragged him and his uncle away. Punched, hit with rifle butts and cut with knives, Ruhuma was taken to a makeshift detention centre in the middle of the night.

In a stark reminder of the lawlessness that prevails in Libya eight months after the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi, the gunmen never told Ruhuma why they abducted him. He says it stems from a family issue – a relative wanted revenge, so he called on the help of an armed brigade.

Tunisian plane destroys 2 vehicles near Libya

TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) — A pair of Tunisian fighter jets attacked and destroyed two vehicles filled with weapons crossing the desert border from Libya, while a third escaped to Algeria, a Tunisian security official said Thursday.

The incident happened Wednesday evening near the triangle shaped no-man’s land in the Sahara desert where the borders of Tunisia, Libya and Algeria converge.

The jets were on a routine patrol when they were fired on by the vehicles, which were carrying rocket propelled grenades, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because it was a matter for the Defense Ministry.

The Defense Ministry has made no public comment about the incident, which has been widely reported in the Tunisian media.
