Op Kleintje Muurkrant stond laatst het volgende bericht:

Weet u het nog, dat dumpen van giftig afval in de Ivoorkust. Het stoombootje, de Probo Koala, vertrok met zijn lading uit Amsterdam. Volgens de speciale rapporteur van de VN prof. O. Ibeanu zijn er sterke aanwijzingen dat ten gevolge van het dumpen er doden gevallen zijn.
De BBC trok met een ploeg naar de Ivoorkust om daarvan verslag uit te brengen, maar Trafigura huurde een duur advocatenkantoor in Londen in en dreigde met schadeclaims. Goede naam van het bedrijf enz enz enz. (Blijkbaar had men bij Trafigura vergeten dat er tientallen interne emails over de giftige troep gelekt waren. Ja voor een winst van 7 miljoen dollar doe je wel wat, toch). De BBC zond de reportage in mei 2009 uit maar zwichtte uiteindelijk voor de juristen van Trafigura en haalde de uitzending pasgeleden uit haar digitale archief.
Al Jazeera berichtte op 20 mei 2009 vrij uitgebreid over Trafigura en het gifschip. Het chemisch afval dat werd gedumpt rond Abidjan, de hoofdstad van Ivoorkust, heeft waarschijnlijk duizenden mensen ziek gemaakt, waarbij ook doden vielen. De regering van Ivoorkust heeft van Trafigura een schadevergoeding ontvangen, op voorwaarde dat men het bedrijf in Ivoorkust niet verder zal vervolgen. Maar veel slachtoffers ontvingen geen enkele compensatie. Zij klagen Trafigura nu aan in Engeland, omdat het hoofdkantoor in Londen gevestigd is.

Ook de BBC zond in mei 2009 een reportage uit over het gifschandaal. Trafigura en hun advocaten Carter Ruck klaagden daarop de BBC aan wegens smaad. Tot voor kort stond die reportage nog op de website van de BBC, maar op 10 of 11 december werd deze verwijderd. Daarop heeft iemand deze reportage op YouTube geplaatst.

Trafigura en Carter Ruck zijn berucht om de manier waarop ze de repressieve media-wetten gebruiken om gerechtvaardigde kritiek en commentaar te onderdrukken. Niet alleen de BBC, maar ook het dagblad The Guardian kreeg een verbod om over deze zaak te berichten, terwijl er in het Britse parlement wel over werd gesproken. Het verbod om over dit gifschandaal te berichten, leidde in Engeland tot felle kritiek.
Trafigura directeur Pierre Lorinet beweert echter dat het slechts om desinformatie zou gaan! De rechtszaak tegen Trafigura loopt nog.

Gisteravond besteedde NOVA ook aandacht aan het Probo Koala-schandaal. Het gif ligt er nog en de slachtoffers hebben nog steeds geen schadevergoeding gekregen.
Ik heb de reportage ook gezien. De slachtoffers zullen waarschijnlijk nooit een cent schadevergoeding krijgen omdat het geld al door de corrupte elite is verdeeld. Het ziekenhuis is gebouwd maar er is geen geld beschikbaar gesteld voor personeel. De slachtoffers leven nog steeds te midden van het niet opgeruimde gif dat hoog opgestapeld ligt.
Bij het googlen n.a.v. de nieuwe Muurkrant serie Ship Ahoy over de nucleaire dump in (oude) schepen door de Calabrische mafia kwam ik deze prachtige Italiaanse politieke komiek tegen die o.a. de Parmalat zaak boven tafel heeft gekregen:

Overigens is Trafigura al eerder over de schreef gegaan o.a. inzake de Oil for Food leveranties m.b.t. Irak in het Saddam tijdperk.
De Kleintje Muurkrant serie Ship Ahoy over het neerzinken van schepen met nucleair afval in de Middellandse Zee is nu ook opgemerkt op een Italiaans forum.
Een zekere Theodoor Cranendonk, een oud militair/baret, die later in de wapenhandel ging (vanuit Zwiterland) schijnt een centrale persoon in dit schandaal te zijn. De heer Cranendonk -nu woonzaam in Rotterdam blijkens een verslag van de Filipijnse society verslaggeefster Becky Garcia – is veroordeeld in Italie voor een illegale wapentransactie, maar schijnt om onduidelijke redenen vrij rond te lopen in Nederland..

NEW RESEARCH REVEALS SCALE OF TOXIC DUMPING IN THE MEDITERRANEAN
Over 70 sunken ships suspected of having carried toxic and radioactive waste
New research shows there have been over 70 suspicious ship sinkings in the Mediterranean sea between 1979 and 2001, which could be linked with toxic waste traffic. Suspicious ship sinkings have been increasing in frequency in the late 90s and around 100.000 tonns of cargo has been lost in that area. This information obtained from the Lloyd’s register of shipping in London, has been compiled and published on the website http://www.infondoalmar.info, launched today.
“People think toxic and radioactive sea dumping is an Italian issue, given recent events there” – asserted Paolo Gerbaudo, a freelance journalist and UK correspondent of il manifesto daily, who has led the research conducted for the website. “This research shows how many ships suspected of having carried toxic waste have sunk in international waters and off the coasts of other Mediterranean countries like Greece, Lebanon and Turkey. It is about time the Italian government, the European Union, and the International Maritime Organisation intervene on this issue. Inaction could cost thousand of lives”.
The newly published research reveals a series of worrying patterns such as the disproportionate presence of marble and cement as declared cargo, both being heavy materials able to screen radioactivity in the case of port controls, as well as of scrap iron, copper and steel, which have been often linked with radioactive contamination.
“We came to realize that the Italian and the international public was struggling to come to grips with this case because of its sheer complexity, the high number of incidents, as well as the uncertainty about them” – said David Boardman, researcher at MIT, who developed the website. “We thought there was no better way to visualize the situation than to create an online map of the sinkings based on official data from Lloyd’s”.
Infondoalmar.info is intended as a work in progress project, and invites users and experts to submit further information to add to the understanding of different incidents. In the first 3 days after the launch of the Italian version, the website has already received tens of e-mails signalling new cases or providing new details on known incidents.
The website documents how under the Mediterranean Sea lie tens of ecological time bombs, which could release thousands of tons of toxic and radioactive waste into the water with incalculable consequences for the environment and human health. Yet, Italian and international institutions have so far failed to deal with this looming ecological catastrophe. It is hoped that infondoalmar.info will bring more public and political attention to this very important issue.

Dank zij jouw tip heb ik die serie gelezen: Ship Ahoy staat nu ook in het archief van Kleintje Muurkrant.
Helaas kun je die boeven wel aanhouden, maar wie ruimt die troep op van de zeebodem? Het is één tikkende tijdbom…
Ook voor de kust van Somalie is er veel nucleair en chemisch afval gedumpt met medeweten van de VN en westerse landen. Er is niets gedaan met de klachten daarover van Somalische vissers die bovendien door illegale visserij door rijke landen hun broodwinning zijn kwijt geraakt. Is het vreemd dat de vissers tot piraterij zijn overgegaan..?
Overigens zijn een Italiaanse journaliste en haar cameraman die onderzoek deden naar de afvaldumpingen voor de Somalische kust onder verdachte omstandigheden vermoord (zie mijn eerdere postings bij dit onderwerp).

Somali Complaints and Appeals on Illegal Fishing & Hazardous Waste Dumping
Another major problem closely connected with the IUUs and illegal fishing is industrial, toxic and nuclear waste dumping in both off-shore and on-shore areas of Somalia. Somali authorities, local fishermen, civil society organizations and international organizations have reported and warned of the dangerous consequences of these criminal actions. In a Press Statement dated 16 Sept 1991, the SSDF, which then administered the Northeastern Regions of Somalia, sternly warned “all unauthorized and illegal foreign fishing vessels in the Somali waters are prohibited, with immediate effect, to undertake any further illegal fishing and to stay clear of the Somali waters”. In April 1992, SSDF Chairman, Gen. Mohamed Abshir Musse wrote to the then Italian Foreign Minister, Gianni De Michelis, drawing his attention to the robbery of the Somali marine resources and ecosystem destruction by unlicensed Italian trawlers.
In September 1995, leaders of all the Somali political factions of the day (12 of them) and two major Somali NGO Networks jointly wrote to the UN Secretary General, Dr Boutros Boutros Ghali, with copies to the EU, Arab League, OIC, OAU and to other involved parties, detailing the illegal fishing and hazardous material dumping crises in the Somali sea waters and requesting the UN to set up a body to manage and protect these waterways. They pointed out that since ICAO already manages the Somali airspace, so could IMO or a newly created organization run Somalia’s seas until an effective Somali national government is able to take control of it. Again, from 1998 to 2006, consecutive Ministers of Fisheries of Puntland State of Somalia have repeatedly appealed to the international community: UN, EC, African Union, Arab League and to individual nations, advising the members states of these organizations to help keep poaching vessels and crews from their countries out of the Somali waters. The Ministers also complained of oil spills, toxic and nuclear waste dumping in the Somali coast.
Somali fishermen in various regions of the country also complained to the international community about the illegal foreign fishing, stealing the livelihoods of poor fishermen, waste dumping and other ecological disasters, including the indiscriminate use of all prohibited methods of fishing: drift nets, under water explosives, killing all “endangered species” like sea-turtles, orca, sharks, baby whales, etc. as well as destroying reef, biomass and vital fish habitats in the sea (IRIN of March 9, 2006). Fishermen in Somalia have appealed to the United Nations and the international community to help them rid the country’s shores of foreign ships engaged in illegal fishing. United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimated 700 foreign-owned vessels were engaged in unlicensed fishing in Somali waters in 2005. However, FAO said it was “impossible to monitor their fishery production in general, let alone the state of the fishery resources they are exploiting….there is also strong suspicion of illegal dumping of industrial and nuclear wastes along the Somali coast”, IRIN 09/03/06.
“They are not only taking and robbing us of our fish, but they are also trying to stop us from fishing,” said Jeylani Shaykh Abdi, a fisherman in Merca, 100km south of Mogadishu. “They have rammed our boats and cut our nets”, he added. Another Merca fisherman, Mohamed Hussein, said [Our] existence depends on the fish. He accused the international community of “talking only about the piracy problem in Somalia, but not about the destruction of our coast and our lives by these foreign ships.” Jeylani noted that the number of foreign ships had increased over time. “It is now normal to see them on a daily basis, a few miles off our shores” (IRIN 09/03/06).
Describing the activity as “economic terrorism”, Somali fishermen told IRIN that the poachers were not only plundering the fish but were also dumping rubbish and oil into the sea. They complained the Somali government was not strong enough to stop it. “We want the international agencies to help us deal with this problem,” said Hussein. “If nothing is done about them, there soon won’t be much fish left in our coastal waters.” Musse Gabobe Hassan and Mohamud Hassan Tako of the Mogadishu Maritime and Fisheries Institute accuse foreign ships of illegal fishing and dumping of hazardous waste in Somali waters. “Somalia’s coastal communities who eke their livelihood from the sea are appealing to the international community for help stop the illegal fishing fleets from both the developed and developing countries that are robbing our marine wealth and destroying its habitats”, they added.
Like the UN Security Council, Chatham House, an International Affairs Think-Tank, in a much publicized recent Paper on piracy in Somalia failed to present a balanced view of the issue and concentrated on the shipping piracy side of the coin. Roger Middleton, the author of the Paper, however, mentions in passing that European, Asian and African (Egypt and Kenya) illegally fish in the Somalia waters. In ignoring the principal IUU factor, the origin and the purpose of the shipping piracy, UN and Roger Middleton seem to be either misled or pressured to take this one-sided course by powerful interests who want to cover up and protect the profitable business of illegal fishing.
These crises of the illegal fishing, waste dumping, warlords/mafia deals and the loud complaints of the Somali fishermen and civil society have been known to UN agencies and international organizations all along. The UN Agencies and organizations, which have been fully aware of these crises, often expressed concern and lamentations but never took any positive action against these criminal activities. It appears as if they have also failed to inform the UN Security Council of this tragedy before it passed its resolutions 1816 and 1838 early this year.

The Guardian newspaper revelead evidence recently on how the British Oil company Trafigura tried to cover-up one of the worst pollution disasters which affected the health of more than 30,000 people in Ivory Coast.
This is probably one of the few cases revealed to the public opinion. God knows how many companies must have been following the example of Trafigura in hoping to make fortunes by causing environmental tragedies.
In Italy, a former mobster named Francesco Fonti admitted he had personally shipped toxic and radioactive waste to Somalia. That traffic could have led to the death of reporter Ilaria Alpi and her cameraman Milan Hrovatin.
Several cases, where the Sea was being used as a disposal area for radioactive and toxic waste, have come to light. Up to 41 ships could have been intentionally sunk off the shores of Italy, Spain, Greece, reaching as far as Asia and Africa. This was part of a lucrative business organised by the ‘Ndrangheta’, the Calabria based mafia syndicate.

Voor de sage over Theodor Cranendonk, de beruchte Nederlandse handelaar in ellendig afval, wapens en andere leuke dingen voor de mensen, even terug naar aflevering 4 dd. 17 januari jl. Kwoot:
” … En dan is er nog Ligure Abrasivi Snc. (L.I.A.) dat voor het verwerken van giftige afvalstoffen zaken deed met het Zwitserse Finance and Trade Service Est”.
Een uitspraak van pentito Francesco Fonti, die blijkbaar zijn klassiekers kende. De connectie tussen L.I.A. en Theo’s Zwitserse handelsvehikel was in maart 2002 al eens aan de orde geweest in een rapport van Greenpeace. Onze Rotterdamse sjacheraar zou met L.I.A. In 1990 een deal in de steigers hebben gezet, waarbij de dump van een flinke plomp ziekenhuisafval en andere shit door FTS Houston verzorgd zou worden (1).
Greenpeace wist verder nog te putten uit een herderlijk schrijven van vriend Theo aan een stel Zuidafrikaanse handelspartners op het terrein van olie en sigaretten. Daarin stelde hij de mogelijkheid in het vooruitzicht om 1000 tot 5000 ton giftig afval vanuit Italië over te hevelen naar Angola, waar hij een lokale overheidsinstantie plat had gekregen voor het bouwen van een verwerkingsinstallatie.
Zijn voornoemde deals doorgegaan? Weten we niet. Laten we aan de echte speurneuzen over. Feit blijft dat Cranendonk in 1997 achter het Italiaanse gaas ging omdat ie de ‘Ndrangetha van 30 bazooka’s had voorzien. Hij kreeg tien jaar voor zijn mik, maar werd na korte tijd overgebracht naar een ziekenhuis vanwege ernstige depressieve klachten. Vandaaruit werd hij ontvlucht. The colors of the Mediterranean are strong at this time of year on the border of Calabria and Basilicata. The sun shines brightly and low in the sky. The mountains and the sea are beautiful here and rich in traditions of organic agriculture, music and art that date back to the findings of paleolithic man and the Magna Grecia civilization before the Roman Empire. But all is not well. The Mediterranean Sea, calm at times and agitated at others, holds the wrecks of “secret ships,” as it whispers and roars the hidden history of its revolutionary past. These ships are known here as the Navi Dei Veleni (ships of poison), and their contents are kept secret from the population and the world by the Italian Mafia/State. This Berlusconi led Mafia/State with its unconstitutional decrees that violate Article 32 (see note) of the Italian constitution along with others, puts the health of the population at risk through a legacy of toxic and radioactive dumping now coming to light across the sea and landscape. People are worried: about the economy, the flu, the poor conditions of the hospitals, schools constructed with contaminated building materials that poison the young, and a sea full of ships whose cargos lie unknown and uninvestigated on the sea floor.
In the city of Amantea, Calabria, on October 24, there was a mass International demonstration. Simultaneous actions were held in solidarity in France and Spain as well. Over 400 organizations, local and from all across the Italian peninsula joined together to call for an end to the intentional poisoning of our lands and waters by a criminal/political caste submersed in scandals of sex, prostitution, and corruption, both on the left and the right. The October 24th demonstration in Amantea was called by the local organizing committee which takes its name in memory of the former commander of the Italian Navy, Natale De Grazia, who died in 1995 under very mysterious circumstances at the age of 39. Commander De Grazia was at the forefront of the investigation into the trafficking of radioactive and toxic wastes and was the key point person in the investigation of the lost Ships of Poison.

Van jou had ik nog een post bewaard die uitsluitend bestond uit links en die daarom in de spambox viel. Het dumpen van chemisch afval gebeurt ook op andere plaatsen.
Radioactive waste dumping by the ‘Ndrangheta is een Wikipedia over deze activiteiten van de Italiaanse maffia, maar de link deed het niet. Mocht hij het nog niet doen, dan even googelen op de volledige titel.
Dit artikel van Greenpeace uit 1997 gaat over de toestand in en rond Italië, maar ook in de Zwarte Zee, in de zeeën rond Afrika en Zuid Amerika. De truck is simpel: stop een oud schip vol met gif en laat het vergaan! Schip naar de kelder, bemanning gered, de verzekering betaalt de schade en het afval is keurig “verwerkt”.
The Minister’s Mr Moneybags is een artikel uit 1997 in de Independent. Gaat over een Engelse politica wier echtgenoot, David Mills, betrokken is bij een schandaal rond Berlusconi, waar ook het verwerken van chemisch en radioactief afval boven komt drijven (of liever: wordt afgezonken). Sunken Waste Ship Has Corpses On Board
The ship which the ‘Ndrangheta or Calabrian Mafia sank in 1992 with a load of radioactive sludge off the coast of Southern Italy, discovered earlier this month by authorities pursuant to a tip by cooperating former mobster Francesco Fonti, also has “two bodies on board” as reported by Duncan Kennedy for BBC News:
Local prosecutors say it is possible some of the crew were either unaware of the intention to sink the ship or were deliberately killed by the mafia. He says they will only know for sure once the ship has been recovered. The mafia informant says he personally sank two other vessels and that he knew of at least 30 more ships sabotaged by the mafia. The man, who is under house arrest, has told his interrogators that the toxic waste came from Italian and European pharmaceutical companies and the mafia was paid between $2m and $20m to sink the ships.
Meanwhile, critics are protesting that the Italian government is not acting quickly enough to remove the toxic waste from the discovered vessel or to locate the other sunken ships which are polluting the Mediterranean as reported by Michael Day for The Independent.

In de Daily Telegraph wordt nog aanvullende info gegeven over het neerzinken van gifschepen voor de Somalische kust aan het begin van de jaren 90 in ruil voor machinegeweren voor groepen opstandelingen. Het zou mij niet verbazen dat onze nationale wapenhandelaar Theodoor Cranendonk bij deze deal betrokken was..

De regering Berlusconi probeert de zaak van de afgezonken gischepen alsnog in de doofpot te manoevreren.
De onderzoekscommissie olv een persoonlijke vriend van Berlusconi (Gaetano Pecorella) heeft zelf een wrak laten onderzoeken voor de Calabrische kust dat door Francesco Fonti was genoemd(Centraro). Daaruit bleek dat er geen gifvaten waren aangetroffen. Nu blijk dat niet de Centraro is onderzocht maar dt opzettelijk een ander -naburig – wrak (van het passagierschip Catania) is “onderzocht”.
De bestuurder van het onderwatervaartuig POV Giuseppe Arena die in opdracht van de Calabrische justitie eerder de Centraro heeft onderzocht beweert dat er wel degelijk vaten in het wrak zijn.
De heer Arena werd voor de kamercommissie o.l.v. Pecorella geintimideerd en voor schut gezet. De oppositie (met ladingen boter op het hoofd?) in de commissie hield zich overigens muisstil..

Mijn Italiaans is echt niet te best, maar daar hebben we vertaalmachines voor.
Dat er een schoft is opgepakt, maakt echter geen einde aan het eigenlijke probleem: Overal langs de kusten van de grote vaarroutes zijn schepen zogenaamd “vergaan” met een lading (radioactief) gif aan boord. Tijdbommen zijn het!

Ik heb Angelo van Schaik, Italie correspondent van de wereldomroep en radio 1, een email gestuurd omdat hij vorige week in een bijdrage voor het eerst in de Nederlandse mainstream pers de gifschepen voor de Italiaanse kust heeft genoemd. Vorige week is in Rotterdam wapenhandelaar en milieucrimineel Theodoor Cranendonk opgepakt om te worden gehoord in de zaak van de gezonken gifschepen (m.n. begin jaren 90). Ook moet deze man het grootste deel van een gevangenisstraf nog uitzitten wegen wapenhandel met de Ndrangheta die de gifschepen in de Middellandse Zee, de Zwarte Zee en voor de kust van Somalie liet zinken.
De kamercommissie onder voorzitterschap van Pecorella (persoonlijke vriend van Berlusconi) probeert nu de zaak toch weer in de doofpot te krijgen door te stellen dat een door Francesco Fonti (ex mafia) genoemd gifschip (Centraro) voor de kust van Calabrie geen gifvaten bevat. De Calabrische justitie heeft video opnamen gemaakt bij het wrak die wel vaten aantonen. Het blijkt dat de kamercommissie expres video opnamen van een naburig wrak van een gezonken passagierschip (Catania) heeft laten maken en het publiek wil doen geloven dat er niets aan de hand is. De maker van de video opnamen van de Centraro (Giuseppe Arena) is door de voorzitter van de kamercommissie onlangs te kakken gezet als een fantast en praatjesmaker.
Wij denken dat het gaat om een enorm (wereldwijd) milieuschandaal gaat waarbij vergeleken het Probo Koala verhaal absolute peanuts is. Ook de VN, europese regeringen en multinationals zijn erbij betrokken.
Hopelijk ga je er meer over publiceren bij de Wereldomroep of op Radio 1.

Alleen nogmaals: wie ruimt het op?
Theo Cranendonk leverde niet alleen wapens aan de Ndrangheta maar ook de explosieven om de schepen met gifvaten af te laten zinken.
Tegen Cranendonk liep meer dan 10 jaar een internationaal opsporingsbevel. Blijkbaar heeft onze Theo dermate goede vrienden bij de Nederlandse justitie, politie en politiek dat hij zo lang zijn louche bedrijven kon blijven runnen.
Het grote probleem is het vaststellen van de locatie van de wrakken en de omvang van het aanwezige gif. De schepen liggen van 500 meter diepte tot soms wel 3000 meter.

van giftig en nucleair afval te stoppen. Mede door acties van Greenpeace
is het verbod op het dumpen van vaten radioactief afval in zee tot stand
gekomen en worden sloopschepen tegenwoordig als giftig afval gezien. Zo
heeft Greenpeace ook een belangrijke rol gespeeld in geruchtmakende
zaken zoals die van het sloopschip Otapan en het dumpen van gif in
Ivoorkust door het schip Probo Koala
Als milieuorganisatie voert Greenpeace campagne om milieuwetgeving tot
stand te brengen en zo nodig aan te scherpen. Het is echter de taak van
de overheid om toe te zien op naleving van de bestaande milieuwetgeving.
Wij kunnen overheden wel aanspreken op hun verantwoordelijkheid (en dat
doen we ook), maar wij kunnen deze taak niet overnemen.
Wat betreft de ‘navi dei veleni’ en het dumpen van Italiaans giftig

Het bericht van persbureau NOVUM over de 78-jarige wapenhandelaar die in Rotterdam is aangehouden moet blijkbaar de identiteit van deze bekende Nederlandse miljonair en zakenman moeten verdoezelen:
- zelfs de initialen ontbreken;
- hij heeft slechts 6 maanden gevangen gezeten tot zijn opname in de kliniek;
- de ontsnapping vond feitelijk plaats op de ochtend van 11 maart 1999;
- de ontsnapping vond plaats vanuit een psychiatrische kliniek (“Le Betulle” in Appiano Gentile, provincie Como) waar de heer Cranendonk onbewaakt behandeld werd voor depressieve klachten en onbegeleid vrijheid van bewegen had rond de kliniek – op zaterdag onder begeleiding ook buiten de kliniek gedurende 5 uur – ..
Cranendonk wordt waarschijnlijk binnenkort ondervraagd in de zaak van de gifwrakken nu Emilio di Giovine, een voormalige topbaas van de Ndrangheta, wil gaan uitwijden over wat hij weet over het laten neerzinken van gifwrakken in de wateren rondom Calabrie (hij hoorde van de dochter van Cranendonk met wie hij een affaire had dat haar vader hierbij betrokken was).
Cranendonk wordt ook in relatie gebracht met de beruchte projecten van Giorgio Comerio(Ocean Disposal Management/ODM).

In Rotterdam is een man van 78 aangehouden die achttien jaar geleden was ontsnapt uit een gevangenis in Italië. De Rotterdammer zat daar vast voor illegale wapenverkoop.
De man werd internationaal gezocht en de Nederlandse politie stelde een onderzoek in nadat was gebleken dat hij regelmatig in Rotterdam was.
Het Openbaar Ministerie zegt dat de 78-jarige aan Italië wordt uitgeleverd. Nederland stelt wel als voorwaarde dat hij zijn eventuele straf in Nederland zal uitzitten.

De tweeslachtige houding van de westerse landen (de dumpers van het gif; de herkomstlanden van de industriele visfabrieken die de Afrikiaanse wateren leegvissen) en de VN (die de dumping mede in de doofpot heeft gestopt) over de piraten verraad dat men de piraten niet wil berechten omdat dan de illegale massale gifdumping voor de Somalische kust internationaal wereldnieuws wordt..
In NOVA een impressie van de uitdeling van cheques voor de slachtoffers van de dumping uit het dorp Djibi. De zelf benoemde “organisatoren” (maffiosi in strakke pakken, grote zonnebrillen op) hebben er baat bij dat er zo weinig mogelijk wordt uitgekeerd zodat ze het in hun eigen zakken kunnen stoppen. Uit de reportage blijkt wel dat de meerderheid achter het net gaat vissen. Een aantal krijgt die dag voor de vorm en vanwege de camera’s een cheque na urenlang wachten in de snikhete zon (zonder zonnebrillen..).

Nederlandse maffiabaas opgepakt in Rotterdam
De ‘Man van de dertig bazooka’s’ wordt hij in Italië genoemd. De politie arresteerde donderdag in Rotterdam Theodor C. (78), die vele geheimen kent van de gevaarlijke Italiaanse maffia de ‘ndrangheta.
De Nederlandse politie heeft donderdag een enorme slag geslagen en de Italiaanse justitie een groot genoegen gedaan, met de arrestatie van een 78-jarige wapenhandelaar. Theodor C. voorzag de maffia van Calabrië van zware wapens, maar zou ook betrokken zijn geweest bij het laten zinken van schepen met gevaarlijk (radioactief) afval.
C. ontsnapte in maart 1999, kort nadat hij was veroordeeld tot tien jaar celstraf voor het leveren van onder meer dertig bazooka’s aan de maffia van Calabrië, de ‘teen van de Italiaanse laars’. De Nederlander was of deed zich voor als depressief, mocht naar een particuliere kliniek. Daar liep hij de deur uit, zonder dat het direct iemand opviel.
De ontsnapping leidde tot commotie. C. gold als een van de belangrijkste partners van de ‘ndrangheta , die vandaag de internationale cocaïnehandel vrijwel beheerst. Een financieringsmaatschappij in Liechtenstein, jaaromzet 250 miljoen euro, was zijn dekmantel.
C. was een vertrouweling van maffiabaas Emilio di Giovine. Zijn arrestatie is extra interessant omdat Di Giovane inmiddels heeft besloten met justitie samen te werken. ‘Spijtoptanten’ zijn schaars in de nog uiterst gesloten wereld van de ‘ndrangheta en Di Giovane geldt als iemand die veel weet.
Dit bleek indirect toen hij eind vorig jaar voor een onderzoekscommissie zou getuigen over het afzinken van schepen met radioactief afval door de Calabrese maffia. Hij werd op dezelfde dag geschept door een auto op het zebrapad. Ook gingen winkels van familieleden in vlammen op.
Di Giovane overleefde de aanslag wonderwel en moet nog getuigen. C. zou betrokken zijn geweest bij het afzinken. Bij zijn arrestatie werd in zijn huis een document aangetroffen van het bedrijf ODM, gespecialiseerd in het wegwerken van gevaarlijk afval op zee.
Schepen tot zinken
Volgens een andere spijtoptant, Francesco Fonti, zouden in de jaren tachtig en negentig zeker dertig schepen tot zinken zijn gebracht in het zuiden van de Middellandse en Adriatische Zee. Het onderzoek werd systematisch gefrustreerd en heeft zowel justitieel onderzoekers als journalisten het leven gekost.
Vorig jaar leek er een doorbraak, toen voor het eerst een onderwaterrobot eens op de zeebodem ging kijken. Op een door de spijtoptant aangegeven plek werd een schip gevonden – maar het was niet het Russische schip Cursky, dat met 120 vaten radioactief afval tot zinken was gebracht.
Daarna werd het weer stil rond het onderzoek, totdat Di Giovane zou getuigen. Het Openbaar Ministerie van Reggio Calabrië is sindsdien op vele manieren door de maffia te verstaan gegeven de organisatie met rust te laten. Eenmaal gebeurde dat door een spectaculaire bomaanslag op het paleis van justitie. (ND)

Ik hoop dat Kleintje Muurkrant de zaak in de gaten houdt. Want voor je het weet, wordt er weer iemand “ontsnapt”.

Uit een reportage van Netwerk blijkt dat Theo Cranendonk AL NA TWEE DAGEN is vrijgelaten op last van de rechter commissaris omdat zijn vrouw ziek zou zijn.. terwijl men weet dat hij vluchtgevaarlijk is en zelfs heeft geholpen bij de vlucht van maffiabaas Di Giovine uit een Portugese gevangenis..
Dit stinkt net zo als die Turkse vrouwenhandelaar die vrij kreeg vanwege zijn zoontje dat ziek was of zoiets.
De rechters zijn dus echt zo corrupt als wat. Hopelijk worden hier ook kamervragen over gesteld, maar ik vrees het ergste.
De Nederlandse Wapenhandelaar Theodoor C. werd meer dan tien jaar geleden in Italië veroordeeld voor de levering van tientallen bazooka’s aan de maffia. Hij vluchtte na zijn vonnis naar Nederland. Deze week werd C. gearresteerd.
De Italiaanse onderzoeksrechter in deze zaak vertelt in Netwerk over de banden van Theodoor C. met de georganiseerde misdaad.

Slachtoffers Probo Koala krijgen compensatie
ABIDJAN – Ruim 20.000 slachtoffers van giftig afval dat het schip de Probo Koala in 2006 dumpte in Ivoorkust, hebben onlangs compensatie ontvangen. Dat meldde donderdag Claude Gohourou, die aan het hoofd staat van een organisatie die de slachtoffers vertegenwoordigt.

Het verhaal van de gifschepen (1987-1992) die vanuit Italie met geheime gif/nucleaire lading onder valse vlag naar Venezuela voeren en na weigering door Venezuela doorvoeren – weer onder valse vlag – naar Syrie/Libanon en vandaar na protesten (met een gedeelte van de giflading) in de daarop volgende jaren terugvoeren naar de wateren in de buurt van Italie waarvan een schip met voornamelijk nucleair afval aan de grond gezet werd (Rosso, 1990)en 3 andere schepen heimelijk werden afgezonken (in 1992):

Ook de bedenkelijke rol die Smit Tak bij de berging van de Rosso in 1990 heeft gespeeld en het vervolgens totaal niet reageren op vragen van de Calabrische justitie over die rol blijft een moeilijk verteerbare zaak.
Dit roept ook twijfel op wat de rol van Smit Tak geweest is bij andere bergingen van vaartuigen waarbij mogelijk illegale nucleaire lading aan boord was.
Crime industry diversifying
Despite international efforts to halt dumping of illegal waste outrageous incidents occur. Collating relevant data is difficult but there is no doubt about the damage.
Toxic waste causes long-term poisoning of soil and water, affecting people’s health and living conditions, sometimes irreversibly. It mainly involves slow processes that must be monitored for years to be detectedand proven (let alone remedied).
Unscrupulous waste trade became a serious concern in the 1980s due to three converging factors:
-increasing amounts of hazardous waste;
-inadequate processing plants;
-stricter regulations in the developed world with growing environmental awareness.
Managing special waste streams properly became expensive, apparently too costly for some. Filthy shipments started travelling round the world.

Karin B en Deepsea Carrier (1987)
Italiaanse zakenmannen sloten deals met Nigerianen. De Italianen vervoerden giftig chemisch afval vanuit verschillende industrieën naar Nigeria, waar het vervolgens in de achtertuinen van onwetende Nigerianen werd gedumpt, die in de veronderstelling waren dat de tonnen alleen bouwmaterialen bevatten.
Toen de afvalvaten maanden later begonnen te lekken, ontstond een behoorlijk schandaal. Het afval bleek PCBs te bevatten, en verder asbestvezels en dioxine. De regering van Nigeria huurde een aantal mensen in om het afval op te ruimen, maar deze werden ziek doordat onvoldoende beschermende kleding was geleverd. Symptomen waren onder andere misselijkheid, chemische verbrandingen en verlammingsverschijnselen.
De tankers Karin B en Deepsea Carrier namen uiteindelijk een groot deel van het afval mee terug richting Italië. Daar stuitte men echter op hevige protesten, waardoor het nog zeker twee jaar duurde voor beide schepen waren uitgeladen. Het afval werd naar opslagplaatsen gebracht en daar onderzocht en ontmanteld.
