Information warfare: Russia accused of killing civilians in Syria

Russian airstrikes hit ISIS command post and training camp in Syria.

Syria: Thoughts On The Russian Air Support

By Moon Of Alabama

October 01, 2015 “Information Clearing House” – Some things that happened today:

The Syrian government asked the Russian Federation for air support in its fight against the foreign supported insurgency.
The Russian parliament agreed to a Russian government request for a legal mandate to do so.
Russian officers in Iraq informed the U.S. embassy in Baghdad of upcoming strikes and recommended that U.S. planes stay out of the area and that U.S. forces on the ground be removed.
Russian planes started to bomb insurgency held fixed positions in Homs and Hama governate in west Syria. Both governates are next to Latakia where the Russian forces are deployed.

Immediately after news of the first Russian strike the U.S. payed “Syrian Civil Defense” organization “White Helmets” posted propaganda claims of killed children. The picture it used to prove its claims had also been used on September 25, before the Russians started to bomb.

Next came claims that the Russian had hit “moderate rebels” which the U.S. says are its good guys.

To which Mark Adomanis snarked:

The US couldn’t find “moderate” rebels in 3 years. Apparently the Russians did in 24 hours

Putin: Claims Russian jets killed civilians in Syria emerged before airstrikes started

US Complains As Russia Bombs its Terrorists

By Tony Cartalucci

October 01, 2015 “Information Clearing House” – “NEO”- The New York Times in its recent article, “Russians Strike Targets in Syria, but Not ISIS Areas,” attempts to frame Russia’s recent actions in Syria as dishonest and dangerous. It reports:

Russian aircraft carried out a bombing attack against Syrian opposition fighters on Wednesday, including at least one group trained by the C.I.A., eliciting angry protests from American officials and plunging the complex sectarian war there into dangerous new territory.

This of course would only make Russia’s actions dishonest or dangerous if groups trained by the US CIA were in fact the “moderates” the US claims they are. However, they are not, and thus Russia’s actions are duly justified as is the expansion of their current policy.

Bombs Kill Shock

By Craig Murray

October 01, 2015 “Information Clearing House” – After UK and US bombs have been devastating the Middle East for over a decade, killing certainly tens and probably hundreds of thousands of people, including many thousands of children, the media have suddenly noticed this morning that bombs kill an awful lot of civilians. But only Russian bombs, of course. British bombs are cheerful, happy and their shrapnel and blast are brilliantly engineered only to go in the direction of bad guys.

The UK/US bombing of Sirte was approximately 500 times more devastating than the Russian bombings yesterday. Yet strangely there was not one single BBC report on the thousands of civilian casualties they caused in just one of many towns they bombed in Libya.

It is worth pointing out that whether yesterday’s bombing by the Russians was against ISIL or against a different bunch of crazed Islamist rebels, one still supported by the CIA and Saudi Arabia, makes no difference whatsoever to the legal position. It was at the request of the Government of Syria and thus legal.

Obama’s Ludicrous ‘Barrel Bomb’ Theme

In addressing the United Nations, President Obama singled out for condemnation Syria’s President Assad and his alleged use of “barrel bombs,” but Obama was silent on his own use of far more powerful ordnance or the civilian tolls from Saudi/Israeli attacks with highly lethal U.S. bombs, writes Robert Parry.

Finally Some Clarity About Russian Plans For Syria

By The Saker

October 01, 2015 “Information Clearing House” – “The Saker”- A lot has happened in the last few hours. Putin spoke at the UN, the Russian Parliament has approved the use of Russian military forces in Syria and Sergei Ivanov has given the Russian media a detailed explanation for the reasons which made the Kremlin request such an authorization. The picture has finally become much clearer.

Hundreds of Iranian Soldiers in Syria for Major Ground Offensive: Report

The soldiers will reportedly join Syrian government forces for ground fight while Russian warplanes attack from air

By MEE Staff

October 01, 2015 “Information Clearing House” – “MEE”- As Russia has started airtrikes in Syria, hundreds of Iranian soldiers preparing to join government forces in a major ground offensive have reportedly arrived in the country in the past 10 days, sources told Reuters on Thursday.

The ground offensive, according to the two Lebanese sources who talked to Reuters, will work in concert with the Russian bombardment and may be focused in the Idlib and Hama countryside.

“They are not advisors … we mean hundreds with equipment and weapons. They will be followed by more,” a second source told Reuters. Iraqis will also take part in the joint operation, the source said.

French raid on IS in Syria ‘kills 12 child soldiers’

France said strikes were aimed at targets identified during coordinated surveillance missions

A Syrian activist group on Wednesday said France’s first air strike on Islamic State militants in Syrian territory killed 30, including 12 child soldiers.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Sunday’s strike on an IS camp in eastern Syria had also wounded about 20 fighters.

French President Francois Hollande said on Sunday six jets had destroyed the camp in the province of Deir al-Zour.

Syria Condemns US Airstrikes, Praises Russian Aerial Bombing

A presidential spokesperson accused the Washington and their allies of violating Syria’s sovereignty and international law.

Syria slammed the U.S.-led airstrikes Wednesday saying they were “ineffective,” while praising Russia for their air support, as Moscow reported its air force has carried out 20 combat missions attacking eight Islamic State group targets without affecting civilians.

Russian Defense Ministry spokesperson Igor Konashenkov said that on Wednesday, “Russian aerospace force jets delivered pinpoint strikes on eight ISIS terror group targets in Syria. In total, 20 flights were made,” using ISIS to refer to the Islamic State group.

“As a result, arms and fuel depots and military equipment were hit. ISIS coordination centers in the mountains were totally destroyed.”

Syrian Kurdish fighters welcome Russian strikes, demand weapons for anti-IS fight

General Commander of the YPG calls on Russia to target al-Nusra Front and expand support for anti-IS fighters on the ground

The largest pro-Kurdish group fighting in Syria has said it is ready to co-operate with Moscow, after Russian jets began launching airstrikes in the country.

After Russia began a series of 20 strikes in the north of the country on Wednesday night, the leader of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) called the move “an important step”.

Sipan Hemo, general commander of the YPG, told Russian news agency Sputnik that his fighters want to co-operate with Russia against the forces of Islamic State (IS).

Iraq PM open to Russian airstrikes on Islamic State militants

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi told FRANCE24 in an exclusive interview broadcast on Thursday that he is open to allowing Russia to carry out air strikes against Islamic State group militants in Iraq.

“Not yet. It is a possibility. If we get the offer, we will consider it,” Abadi told FRANCE24.

Peshmerga forces retake 12 villages from Daesh in Iraq

Thousands of Kurdish Peshmerga forces have managed to retake 12 villages in the northern Iraqi province of Kirkuk from Daesh terrorists, after they mounted an all-out ground offensive to drive out the militants from the oil-rich areas.

The operation was launched “from three fronts west of Kirkuk” in the early morning hours of Wednesday when some 3,500 Peshmerga fighters cleared an area of 140 square kilometers (56 square miles), said the Kurdistan Region Security Council in a statement.

Putin: Who created ISIS?

Regime Change as American as Apple Pie

By Finian Cunningham

October 01, 2015 “Information Clearing House” – “Sputnik” US President Barack Obama is someone to almost pity. For he has the unenviable task of standing before the nations of the world and smugly spout endless falsehoods — as he did, yet again, during his address to the UN General Assembly.

By contrast, Russian President Vladimir Putin in his address to the UN may not have displayed the same oratorical flourishes as Obama, but far more importantly Putin spoke about some of the most pressing international problems with words that were the plain truth.

When Putin spoke about the UN and international law being undermined by “exceptional” unilateral actions of the United States, he was able to put his finger on the crux of why conflict, chaos and terrorism are raging in so many parts of the world.

And if we are trying to fix these problems, genuinely, then what the world needs is an accurate diagnosis. Putin delivered that, while Obama just added further layers of obfuscation and misinformation, making such problems ever-more insoluble.

As Putin clearly indicated, illegal US-led regime-change operations that subvert international law and the UN Charter are at the root of ongoing, widespread conflicts, from Afghanistan to Iraq, from Libya to Syria and to Ukraine.

These clandestine American-led interventions have also fuelled the explosion in terror networks across the Middle East, Central Asia and Africa. Putin provided the most logical, rational and credible explanation that allows for collective solutions. Supporting the sovereign government of Syria to defeat foreign-backed terrorism in that country is one such solution.

The Pentagon’s top official overseeing military relations with Russia and Ukraine is resigning amid the ongoing debate within the Obama administration over how to respond to Russian moves in Ukraine and Syria.

Putin’s Blitz Leaves Washington Rankled and Confused

    by Mike Whitney

The real reason the no-fly zone issue has resurfaced is because it was one of the concessions Obama made to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for the use of Incirlik airbase. Washington has kept the terms of that deal secret, but Hollande has let the cat out of the bag.

And that’s why the normally-cautious Putin decided to deploy his warplanes, troops and weaponry so soon after the Incirlik deal was signed. He could see the handwriting on the wall. He knew he had to either act fast and turn the tide or accept the fact that the US and Turkey were going to topple Assad sometime after Turkey’s snap elections on November 1. That was his timeline for action. So he did the right thing and joined the fighting.

A Game of Dice With Russia: “Do You Realize What You Have Done?”

Whatever happens next, the US is on notice to stop playing with fire. Let’s hope, as Otto von Bismarck said, that “there is a Providence that protects idiots, drunkards, and the United States of America,” so that the Americans understand, still in Bismarck’s words, not to “expect that once we have taken advantage of Russia’s weakness, we will profit forever.”

The Teutons, the Mongols, the Turks, the French, and the Nazis all learned that hard lesson. It’s time for the US to take up Russia’s offer to join a coalition alliance to stamp out these proliferating terrorists—implicitly, instead of training and funding them until the whole scam blows up in their faces, as it’s doing in Syria. “The secret of politics is to make a good treaty with Russia,” Bismarck advised. As history shows, it is not wise to play dice with Russia.

NATO has started its biggest exercise since 2002 with 36,000 international troops from 30 states, including non-NATO nations, participating in the drills which are taking place at sea, in the air and across the territory of three European states.

The alliance has kicked off its massive “Trident Juncture 2015” exercises which will last until November 16. Along with the NATO member states, seven more partner nations are participating in the drills: Australia, Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Finland, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Sweden and Ukraine.

Some 36,000 troops as well as more than 60 warships and about 200 aircraft will participate in the drills which makes it the biggest since 2002 when about 40,000 troops took part in NATO’s “Strong Resolve” military exercise.

NYT Moving into High Spin Denigrating Mr. Putin on Syria

    By Peter Koenig

October 04, 2015 “Information Clearing House” – “The specter of mass protest – of mob rule – seems to have haunted Vladimir V. Putin throughout his political life, and that fear lies at the heart of his belief in the primacy of state authority. It also informs Russia’s forceful intervention in Syria.” NYT, 4 October 2015.

The NYT – one of the key spin doctors in spreading falsehoods – knows no limits in manipulating public opinion and demeaning Mr. Putin in Machiavellian fashion with lies and untrue inferences.

What the paper describes in its article titled “In Putin’s Syria Intervention, Fear of a Weak Government Hand”, is just about what the US has been doing in Syria since 2007 with increasing intensity by training, funding and arming terrorists that were given different names ranging from al Qaeda – to al-Nusra – ISIS/L- Daesh… “moderate opposition” – you name it, to please the Washington hegemon’s needs; and this with the objective of achieving ‘regime change’, meaning replacing President al-Assad with a Washington puppet.

All the while hypocritically and deceptively claiming the US / NATO and other European puppets were fighting the terrorists, when in fact America, the Saudis, Qatar, Turkey, NATO and the EU were funding, arming and training them.

The only legitimate intervention on behalf of a foreign country since WWII is Russia helping Syria since 30 September 2015 in eliminating the foreign funded, devastating terrorism, causing human misery and millions of refugees flooding neighboring countries and Europe.

CIA Interventions in Syria: A Partial Timeline

    By Michael S. Rozeff

October 03, 2015 “Information Clearing House” – “Lew Rockwell”- This partial timeline provides evidence that the U.S. government and Obama in particular bear a significant responsibility for the Syrian war and the results of that war. Obama approved elements of CIA plans that go back over 65 years. The CIA meddling is distinct from the Pentagon’s failed plan to train moderate rebels, not covered in this timeline.

1940s and 1950s “…if you want to understand the origins of authoritarian rule in Syria today, it is important to go back to the 1940s and the 1950s and see the role the CIA played in that land.” See also here, p. 122: “In the late 1940’s, U.S. policymakers grew alarmed when the Syrian government, bowing to public pressure, refused to let a U.S. oil company build a pipeline through its territory. Washington also found the strong anti-Western sentiment and the large Communist party in the country ominous. Concerned that Syria was ‘drifting leftward’, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) laid plans to overthrow its three-year old civilian government.” CIA operatives met with right-wing military leaders in Damascus to discuss installing a “military-supported dictatorship”.

1947-1948 CIA attempts “to influence the 1947-8 elections by backing right-wing figures in the Nationalist Party…”

March, 1949 CIA sponsors Syrian coup d’etat; CIA directly involved.

    Rusland schond Turks luchtruim
    Door ANP
    6 oktober 2015

Russia “Violated” Turkish Airspace Because Turkey “Moved” Its Border:

Here now what McClatchy reported on these air space violations in a longer piece several hours before Reuters and AFP reported the Turkish claim:

ISTANBUL – A Russian warplane on a bombing run in Syria flew within five miles of the Turkish border and may have crossed into Turkey’s air space, Turkish and U.S. officials said Sunday.

A Turkish security official said Turkish radar locked onto the Russian aircraft as it was bombing early Friday in al Yamdiyyah, a Syrian village directly on the Turkish border. He said Turkish fighter jets would have attacked had it crossed into Turkish airspace.

But a U.S. military official suggested the incident had come close to sparking an armed confrontation. Reading from a report, he said the Russian aircraft had violated Turkish air space by five miles and that Turkish jets had scrambled, but that the Russian aircraft had returned to Syrian airspace before they could respond.

The Turkish security official said he could not confirm that account.

So it is the U.S., not Turkey, which was first pushing the claims of air space violation and of scrambling fighters. The Turkish source would not confirm that.

But how could it be a real air space violation when Russian planes “flew within five miles of the Turkish border and may have crossed into Turkey’s air space”. The Russian planes were flying in Syrian airspace. They “may have crossed” is like saying that the earth “may be flat”. Well maybe it is, right?

Fact is the Russians fly ery near to the border and bomb position of some anti-Syrian fighters Turkey supports. They have good reasons to do so:

The town, in a mountainous region of northern Latakia province, has been a prime route for smuggling people and goods between Turkey and Syria and reportedly has functioned as a key entry for weapons shipped to Syrian rebels by the U.S.-led Friends of Syria group of Western and Middle Eastern countries.

One Russian plane may even indeed have slightly crossed the border while maneuvering. But the real reason why the U.S. military official and Turkey claim the above “violations” is because Turkey unilaterally “moved” the Turkish-Syrian border five miles south:

Turkey has maintained a buffer zone five miles inside Syria since June 2012, when a Syrian air defense missile shot down a Turkish fighter plane that had strayed into Syrian airspace. Under revised rules of engagement put in effect then, the Turkish air force would evaluate any target coming within five miles of the Turkish border as an enemy and act accordingly.

Turkish President warns Russia of “losing friendship” with Ankara

    Gepubliceerd op 6 okt. 2015

NATO’s secretary general has accused Russia of deliberately violating Turkish airspace while bombing ISIL positions in Syria.
Turkey says Russian fighter jets violated its airspace two times. Moscow confirms one overflight of the Turkish territory, saying it was accidental and due to bad weather. But it has not commented on the second alleged violation of the Turkish airspace. Turkish president has said his country will not remain silent over the issue. Rejeb Tayyib Erdogan added that quote-losing Turkey’s friendship could cost Russia dearly. He made the remarks in Brussels where NATO ambassadors are meeting to discuss Russia’s air campaign against Daesh terrorists in Syria.
