The Non Aligned Movement consists of some 120 members and 17 observer members. Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro, in 1979 defined the purpose of the Non Aligned Movement as “the national independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and security of non-aligned countries” in their “struggle against imperialism colonialism, neo-colonialism, racism and all forms of foreign aggression.” Lots of revolutionary ideas but how close is NAM to this vision will be looked at on this News Analysis. We will also take a look at the original purpose of this organization and what has or has not been accomplished by it since its inception in 1961.

The meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) heads of state, which is the last leg of the NAM’s 16th summit in Tehran, has kicked off in the Iranian capital with an inaugural speech by the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

More than 100 countries are partaking in the NAM summit, which kicked off at the expert level in Tehran on Sunday. The two-day foreign ministerial meeting of the NAM member states wrapped up on Wednesday with member states finalizing a draft document after two days of deliberations. The meeting of the heads of state will discuss the draft document, which mainly focuses on the Palestinian issue and the Syria unrest.

NAM, an international organization with 120 member states, is considered as not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc. It represents nearly two-thirds of the UN members.

In an interview Press TV, Sarah Marusek, a Beirut-based political commentator, shares her thoughts regarding the issue. The video also offers the opinions of one additional guest: Saeb Shaath who is an author and Middle East affairs expert from Belfast.

The 16th summit of the non-aligned movement held in Iran’s capital, Tehran is close to being wrapped up, but the work of the movement has just begun. With Iran officially taking over the presidency, its work is cut out for the next 3 years, which can quite possibly set a president for many years to come.

On this edition of News Analysis we are asking how the Islamic Republic of Iran as NAM’s president, plans to tackle some of the world’s political issues in the new world order.

    A Major Failure by Washington
A Blast From the Past: The Non-Aligned Movement

    By Eric Margolis

September 03, 2012 “Information Clearing House” – This week’s Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) conference in Tehran brought nostalgic memories of the Cold War and world-bestriding leaders like Nehru, Nasser, Castro, Nkrumah, and Sukarno. However, most of them were disasters for their nations, but they certainly were colorful and interesting.

In spite of intense efforts by the US and Israel to deter attendance at the Tehran meeting – backed by a wave of western media attacks on the conclave – over 150 nations and international bodies attended.

This big turnout marked a major failure by Washington to further tighten its siege of Iran. Of particular note was the presence of India’s prime minister, Manmohan Singh. India refused to bow to US pressure to boycott the event and announced future energy, trade and transport deals with Tehran.

Informal US envoy or US takeover of UN secretariat?

The calls at the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit in Tehran for reforming the United Nations and democratizing the Security Council were not exactly new. These calls for UN reform were embodied by the conference’s dictum of “lasting peace through joint global governance.” These demands have been made over and over again by various countries and groups throughout the years.

Nor was everyone present at the NAM gala in Tehran a friend of Iran or open to the Iranian proposals for reforming the United Nations. The visibly shaken Jeffry Feltman, who was uncomfortably sitting with Iranian officials in Tehran alongside his new boss Ban Ki-moon, can testify to all this. Feltman is a clear symbol of how contaminated the United Nations has become by the imperialist interests of Washington.

America’s Takeover of the United Nations

    Article by: Mahdi Darius Nazemroaya

A New Alternative to the UN is Needed

The “real” international community slapped the Obama Administration in the face from Tehran. The US and all the UN structures and agencies, including the IAEA, under Washington’s control were retorted when all of the NAM’s one hundred and twenty members unanimously supported the Iranian nuclear energy program and declared their opposition to the unilateral sanctions against Iran in their final communiqué. There is still, however, more that is needed. As long as the United Nations is not reformed these very same countries will be walking in the shadows of the US and its allies from NATOistan in the hallways of the United Nations.

The problems go beyond the Security Council. The Secretariat is also a part of the problem. Washington will turn to the UN Secretariat more and more as the Russians and Chinese begin to challenge the US and its allies at the Security Council.

The UN has become even more contaminated by Atlanticist projects to use it to legitimize and launch imperialist military campaigns to enforce a declining system of privilege and unjust global governance that Washington heads. The motivations behind the drafting and institutionalizing of R2P at the UN are aimed at helping to prevent this decline. This is why that either reform or an alternative to the United Nations is needed now more than ever.
