‘US intervention in Syria underway since uprising began’
Gepubliceerd op 5 jun 2012 door RussiaToday

The opposition’s Free Syrian Army says it’s no longer commited to the UN-backed peace plan. Instead, it wants foreign states to impose a no-fly zone to help oust President Assad. The rebels’ decision to quit the UN-backed truce was largely motivated by the behaviour of the U.S. and its allies. That’s the view of anti-war activist Don Debar, who’s extensively covered civil conflicts in Arab countries.

‘Death squads at root of Syria crisis’-News Analysis-05-09-2012

In Syria, the fragile cease-fire brokered by the UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan was broken again: A roadside bomb struck a Syrian military truck, wounding six soldiers. But what was different was that the explosion happened just seconds after a convoy carrying the head of the U.N. observer mission passed by, which has put into speculation that perhaps the UN convoy was the target. If so, this comes just one day after US UN ambassador Susan Rice said the Kofi Annan ceasefire plan was ineffective on all fronts: Syria, its elections, its ceasefire: Subject of this edition of the Press TV News Analysis.

‘UN observers in Syria cannot be trusted’-News Analysis-05-17-2012

Two failed US-backed Security Council resolutions vetoed by Russia and China, promised reforms by Damascus, a new constitution, Kofi Annan’s 6-point peace plan followed by a fragile cease-fire and a flock of UN observers and most recently multi party parliamentary elections, all of those have been decisive factors over the past year or so in Syria. But is the Syrian solution gradually turning into the Syrian conundrum as the U-S and its Arab allies are arming groups fighting the government with significantly more and better weapons in recent weeks?

Viral Violence from Syria to Lebanon-News Analysis-05-23-2012

More bombing in Damascus; Is Syria headed to a civil war in spite of the UN ceasefire? Clashes have erupted between pro and anti Assad groups in northern Lebanon and news of a group of Lebanese pilgrims abducted by anti-government armed groups in Syria. Is Syrian violence spreading into the neighboring country and is there a deliberate attempt to do just that?

Syria new parliament holds first meeting duurt 2 minuten.

Syria: Peace makers or breakers?-News Analysis-05-31-2012
(Klik op de link voor een transcript)

Pressure is mounting on Syria as western states and their allies continue to blame Damascus for killing civilians ever since unrest erupted in Syria over a year ago. But the Syrian representative to the UN says there is a level of awareness arising to the presence of a third element in the violence in Syria. What is this third element doing in Syria and who is supporting its cause? Yet, the US has raised the issue of “action” outside the UN against Syria. Standing opposed is Russia, which has been clear that it will not go back on its stance of non-intervention.

Invasion imminent?-News Analysis-06-04-2012

In Syria the armed opposition says that it no longer recognizes Kofi Anan’s seize fire plan. But it still is not clear who is responsible for violating it. Is Syria headed to civil war? And will there be a foreign military intervention? In another development a British newspaper has revealed that British Special Forces and the MI6 agents have set up camps on Syrian soil. But what is the real reason for presence on another countries soil? Why are there so many unanswered questions when it comes to the Syrian crisis?

The Syrian opposition claims that as many as 100 people have been killed by government forces in the Hama region. The Syrian government claims terrorists are responsible for the slayings.

At least 78 killed in Syria’s Hama province

Some of those killed were stabbed to death, at least 40 of the victims women and children, activists say; killings come less than 2 weeks after massacre in Houla.

Syrian activists: new massacre in Hama

Activists say pro-government militia and security forces have killed at least 78 people, including children

The massacre also comes just a day before Kofi Annan, the UN-Arab League envoy to Syria, is set to address the UN General Assembly and the Security Council on the progress of his six-point peace plan.

International affairs analyst Lajos Szaszdi believes the massacre is just another attempt by rebels to trigger an international action.

“It appears that the victims may have belonged to a group that settled some decades ago to cultivate the land, with the support of the government,” Szaszdi told RT. “They were a protected minority. They may have been killed by rebels to blame it on the government and try to trigger an international intervention, which is something that the rebels want.”

He noted the timing of the most recent killings and compared it to that of the Houla massacre.

“The Houla massacre happened just before Kofi Annan’s visit to Syria, and now Kofi Annan is going to give an address about the situation, and then this massacre happens,” he remarked. “There are members of the armed opposition inside Syria who are very unscrupulous. They don’t want to go back to a situation in which they might have to entertain the possibility of negotiating with the government in Damascus. They just want to remove the government by force.”

SYRIA WAR: Heated Anti-Assad Rhetoric Promotes War
    by Stephen Lendman

    Global Research, June 6, 2012

Increasingly war looks likely. Earlier Obama said “the Assad regime must come to an end.”
In early June, White House press secretary Jay Carney said “bloody sectarian war will be diminished if Assad removes himself from power or is no longer in power.”
“It is essential that the world community come together and unify to pressure Assad and isolate Assad and help precipitate a situation where that political transition can take place.”

Hillary Clinton accused Russia of keeping Assad in power. Putin faces heavy pressure to bow to Western demands. Will he yield or hold firm?

Moscow signed a Security Council statement condemning the Houla massacre. Unlike Washington, Western partners, and regional allies, it points fingers both ways.
Along with China and Cuba, it rejected the Human Rights Council’s (HRC) decision to condemn Syria for the Houla killings. It called doing it “imbalanced and biased.” More on that below.

  • mr. drs. Bou:

Attending Bilderberg 2012 as an ‘international’ participant was Bassma Kodmani.

So who is Bassma Kodmani? The answer to that question is also the answer to the question: what the hell is happening in Syria? This is where it gets interesting (and worrying) for Bilderberg followers.

Kodmani was at Bilderberg in 2008, the last time it was here in Chantilly. She is a member of the European Council on foreign relations – its parent group, the council on foreign relations, is a sort of über lobby group, a couple of rungs down from Bilderberg, but still hugely powerful.

There’s a lot of CFR/Bilderberg crossover. Honorary chairman of both is David Rockefeller; co-chairman of the CFR is Robert Rubin (he was here); and on the CFR’s board of directors are Fouad Ajami and Henry Kravis, both at Bilderberg 2012.

Bassma Kodmani is also the executive director of the Arab Reform Initiative. This body, set up in 2004 by the CFR, is helping to steer “a comprehensive process” of “democratic reform” in the region. In 2005, the Syrian National Council came into being. Bassma Kodmani was a founding member, and is on the executive committee. Kodmani is one of the SNC’s two spokespeople, alongside Radwan Ziadeh (who has a flawless Washington pedigree – look him up). According to its website, the SNC is a non profit public policy research organization register in the District of Colombia and headquartered in Washington DC. Just up the road.

I asked Tarpley about Kodmani. He doesn’t mince words. “She’s a Nato agent, a destabilizer, a colour revolution queen. The fact that Kodmani was there is a scary one for Syria”, says Tarpley.

Coventry – an unlikely home to prominent Syria activist

  • mr. drs. Bou:

According to the Arab Organization for Human Rights, the Shabiha were originally concentrated in the Mediterranean region of Syria around Latakia, Banias and Tartous, where they benefited from smuggling through the ports in the area.[1] They were known to smuggle drugs and hot money across the Lebanesse border in the the Latakia area of Syria and were known as Alawi ganglords.[6] The Daily Telegraph wrote that the Shabiha “gained notoriety for the brutal way it enforced a protection racket in Latakia in the 1990s”, but were apparently disbanded by Bashar Assad after he came to power in 2000.[7] Following the popular uprising that began in March 2011, however, the Shabiha militias were again approved of by Assad’s government.[6]

    En de BBC zegt:
Syria unrest: Who are the shabiha?

Syria’s government has blamed “armed criminal gangs and terrorists” for much of the unrest since March 2011, but activists accuse state-sponsored militia of assisting in the crackdown that has left more than 9,000 people dead. Here is what is known about these armed regime supporters, known locally as the “shabiha”.

Throughout the uprising, many Syrians have said they have seen heavily-armed men dressed in black fighting alongside the security forces.

The men are accused not only of killing and beating people who attend demonstrations, but also of carrying out a campaign of intimidation that has included executions, drive-by shootings and sectarian attacks.

In Syria, Foreign Intervention Will Only Shed More Blood

The US and its Gulf allies are already fuelling sectarian conflict in their proxy war with Iran. The fallout could be disastrous

    By Seumas Milne

June 07, 2012 “The Guardian” – – As Syria descends deeper into civil war and human misery, pressure for yet another western military intervention in the Arab world is growing. Last week, General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the US joint chiefs of staff, declared that the US might take the “military option” in Syria if it was “asked to do so”. Barack Obama’s Republican rival Mitt Romney is meanwhile demanding that the US government arm the Syrian opposition.

Today, Russian and Chinese leaders reaffirmed their opposition to forced regime change and support for UN envoy Kofi Annan’s peace plan. But Susan Rice, US ambassador to the UN, has made clear western powers might act alone and take action “outside the authority” of the UN. Even the new French president François Hollande has said military intervention in his country’s former colonial territory was “not to be ruled out”.

The latest calls for action against Bashar al-Assad’s regime follow the slaughter of 108 people, including 49 children, in Houla less than a fortnight ago. Opposition activists have blamed pro-regime “shabiha” sectarian militias for the massacre; the government al-Qaida terrorists. But there’s no doubt that atrocities such as Houla – let alone killings on a larger scale – have the potential to turn intervention grandstanding into the real thing.

That’s what happened in Kosovo 13 years ago, when contested killings in Racak led to Nato’s bombing campaign outside the authority of the UN.

Syria to militants: Lay down arms or face military offensive

Syria has reportedly given anti-government militants 24 hours to turn in their weapons, warning of a military offensive against the foreign-backed armed gangs after the deadline expires, Press TV reports.

    Huffington Post:

Annan Floats New Peace Plan Idea, Creation Of Contact Group

Annan’s proposal for the creation of a “contact group” of world and regional powers comes as the Syrian opposition and Western and Gulf nations seeking the ouster of President Bashar al-Assad increasingly see Annan’s six-point peace plan as doomed due to the Syrian government’s determination to use military force to crush an increasingly militarized opposition.

Annan will float his proposal during a special session of the 15-nation council on Syria on Thursday, diplomats said on condition of anonymity. The former U.N. secretary-general hopes his new idea can prevent a total collapse of his earlier plan for a truce and negotiated political solution, they said.

The core of the proposal, diplomats said, would be the establishment of a contact group that would bring together Russia, China, the United States, Britain, France and key regional players with influence on Syria’s government or the opposition, such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey and Iran.

By creating such a contact group, envoys said, Annan would also be trying to break the deadlock among the five permanent council members that has pitted veto powers Russia and China against the United States, Britain and France and prevented any meaningful U.N. action on the Syrian conflict, envoys said.

It would attempt to map out a “political transition” for Syria that would lead to Assad stepping aside and the holding of free elections, envoys said.

    Press TV:

Brzezinski: Don’t be emotional about Syria

Former US National Security Adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski has warned against an “emotional” response by the West to the Syrian crisis, saying any foreign intervention in the Arab state could have grave repercussions.

“I don’t think it’s a foregone conclusion at this stage that the majority of Syrians don’t want the [Bashar] Assad government to stay in power. I think it’s much more complicated than that, In fact the evidence of a national uprising against Assad is relatively limited,” Brzezinski said on MSNBC’s Morning Joe program.

En nu ga ik stofzuigen! 😉

Syrian rebels tried to get reporter killed in anti-Assad propaganda bid

‘Both sides involved in very dirty tactics’

RT did an extensive interview with Thomson on the details of his ordeal, and the situation in the country in general.

To be fair to the rebels, you’re not looking at a credible and well-organized army with a very well-organized command and control structure. It was almost like there were groups of different men in the town who controlled different areas, different streets. There was a lot of rivalry.

PSYOP officers have been embedded in the satellite TV channels of Al-Arabiya, Al-Jazeera, BBC, CNN, Fox, France 24, Future TV and MTV.

“It is known that since 1998, the officers of the US Army Psychological Operations Unit (PSYOP) have been incorporated in CNN.
